The fourth edition of SPEED SPORT’s My Favorite Track survey was conducted in late February and early March. The response was more than twice that received during last year’s competition and 10 times more than during the inaugural year in 2012.
Many of America’s race tracks, including Eldora, created social media campaigns specifically to generate votes in the My Favorite Track competition.
A half-mile dirt oval located near Rossburg, Ohio, Eldora Speedway was built in 1954 by Earl Baltes and purchased by three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart 50 years later. The track received 22.8 percent of the My Favorite Track vote to top the list. Last year, Eldora received 19.4 percent of the overall vote.
However, the margin of victory was much closer this year as Virginia Int’l Raceway ran a successful social media campaign and jumped back into the top 10 in the My Favorite Track competition, finishing second.
Located in Alton, Va., the historic road course picked up 16.02 percent of the vote to take second place from Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway, which slipped to third in the voting this year with 12.2 percent of respondents naming the half-mile dirt track, which annually hosts the Knoxville Nationals. Knoxville garnered 10.6 percent of the vote when it finished second last year and has finished in the top three each of the last four years.
Eldora Speedway features a diverse schedule of racing that begins in April and runs through late October. The track’s signature events are the Kings Royal for World of Outlaws sprint cars and World 100 and The Dirt Late Model Dream for dirt late models. NASCAR’s only touring series race on dirt, the Mud Summer Classic which marks its third running July 22, has brought a new group of fans to the historic Darke County dirt track.
USAC, All Star Circuit of Champions, UMP DIRTcar, American Late Model Series, NRA Sprint Invaders and BOSS Sprints also sanction races at Eldora.
